RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Junior
Jalen Richard netted 21 points to lead Cal State East Bay on Thursday night, but the Pioneers dropped their first regular season road game of the season to No. 11 California Baptist by a score of 84-68. The loss evens East Bay's record at 1-1, while Lancers improve to 6-0.
The Pioneers kept the game close in the first ten minutes of the first half and closed to within a point when redshirt freshman
Alex Manu sunk a jumper to make it 10-9 in favor of the Lancers. But that's as close as the Pioneers would get, as the top-ranked team in the West went on a 9-0 run to make it 19-9. Cal State East Bay fought hard and made some runs in the second half, but they would spend the remainder of the game playing catch-up.
"All the credit goes to CBU and Coach (Rick) Croy. His team pressured and defended for 40 minutes," said Head Coach
Gus Argenal. "I liked the way our team responded in the second half, but we need that concentration from the jump. We will bounce back."Â
Despite the loss, the Pioneers shot a spectacular 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the three-point line. Those big numbers from downtown helped the team finish at 47.1 percent (24-for-51) from the field.
CBU had a 38 to 23 advanatge on the glass for the night. Most notably, the Lancers out-rebounded the Pioneers 15-5 on the offensive end, which helped them to a 15-4 advantage on second-chance points.
Richard's 21 points came on 8-for-17 shooting in 28 minutes. He nailed two shots from beyond the arc and dished out three assists. Senior
Alex Carmon also scored in double-figures with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting.
