Pioneers Sweep Saturday Matches to Close out Route 92 Showdown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay Volleyball team was victorious in both of its matches on the second day of their home tournament, the Route 92 Showdown. The Pioneers (3-2) swept Holy Names (0-4) to kick off the morning, and then capped off the tournament with a five-set non-conference win over San Francisco State (2-2).

"I really liked the combination of strong senior play from Amber Hall, Samantha Bruno, Ashia Joseph, and Veronica Sanchez along with the enthusiasm and energy of our freshmen, Brandi Brucato, Marina Aragao, Jovan Turner, and Micah Hammond," said head coach Jim Spagle. "The team showed great determination, focus, and passion in turning the momentum around in game five to come away with a win. It was definitely a character-building moment." 

Match #1: CSUEB 3, Holy Names 0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-18)

After a pair of frustrating losses on the tournament's first day, the Pioneers were able to cruise to a victory over the Hawks to open Saturday's action. They topped HNU in hitting percentage (.305 to .076), kills (38 to 23), and digs (45 to 24) for the match.

The first set started off close until East Bay made a 7-0 run to grab a 13-5 lead. They never looked back from there and posted a .415 team attack percentage (12 kills, two errors) on their way to the 25-15 win.

It was a similar script in the second set, as the Pioneer defense stepped up to hold Holy Names to just six kills in the frame. Trailing 6-5, East Bay won eight of the next nine points to go up 13-7, and then they claimed the final five points to secure the set.

The Pioneers finished off the sweep following the intermission. They used a 7-0 run midway through the third set to take a 16-6 lead, and then hung on for the victory. it was the second 3-0 win of the young season for Cal State East Bay.

Hall led all players with 12 kills and a .435 attack percentage, reaching double figures in kills for the third straight match. Aragao turned in a strong performance as well, notching six kills and a match-high 13 digs.

Bruno tallied eight kills and eight scoops, and Turner posted four kills with a team-high two blocks. Joseph led the Pioneers with 19 assists to go along with six digs, while fellow setter Veronica Fabiano came off the bench to add 11 assists.

Match #2: CSUEB 3, SF State 2 (25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 15-7) 

The Pioneers looked great to start off the final match of the weekend. They scored the first five points and never trailed en route to a relatively easy first-set victory in which they hit .300 as a team. East Bay also never trailed in the second frame, holding off every Gator rally to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.

SF State battled back in the third set and stepped up their defensive block. The score went back and forth until it was tied at 21-21. The Pioneers had a shot to finish off the sweep, but the Gators managed to win the final four points to extend the match. From there, they grabbed the momentum and captured the fourth set, using a 10-1 run midway through the frame to pull away.

It looked as though the Pioneers might be headed for another tough loss, but they turned it around in the final set and ended the tournament on a high note. East Bay grabbed an 8-1 lead when the teams switched sides and held off a late Gator rally to secure the 15-7 win

Hall racked up 16 kills and seven digs, giving the senior a team-high 28 kills in the doubleheader. Bruno notched a double-double woth 15 kills and 10 scoops to go along with a pair of block assists. 

Turner posted a career high with 11 kills and led the team with five total blocks. Hammond tallied eight kills with just one attack error, good for a match-high .389 attack percentage. Arageo added seven kills and recorded 13 digs for the second straight match.

Brucato totaled 23 digs along with four assists, and Sanchez had six scoops of her own. Joseph reached a season high with 43 assists and notched 12 digs, good for her second double-double of the year. 

The Pioneers finish their non-conference schedule with a 3-2 record. They begin play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) on Friday, Sept. 12 when they host No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino, the defending CCAA champions, at 7 p.m.
