East Bay Edged Out by Golden Eagles

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- One night after picking up its first road win, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell to Cal State L.A. in three sets (23-25, 14-25, 30-32) on Saturday night to conclude their Southern California trip. 

The Pioneers came out strong to open the match, carrying over Friday's momentum and winning the first four points. They held a 19-14 lead, but the Golden Eagles made a late run and claimed eight of the last 10 points to pull out the narrow victory.

The home team ran away with game two, hitting a remarkable .696 with 17 kills and one attack error. But East Bay rallied after intermission and refused to roll over in the third set. Cal State L.A. grabbed an early 11-6 lead, but the Pioneers made a run of their own. They were close to extending the match with a 23-20 lead, but the Golden Eagles responded by winning four straight points. Facing match point, East Bay managed to stay alive, and the teams played on into extra points until Loreal Carter finally recorded back-to-back kills to secure the victory for CSULA.

The Pioneers were out-hit .404 to .174 for the match. Amber Hall led the way with 13 kills, her 10th straight match reaching double figures. 

Jovan Turner had another impressive performance on the offensive end, tallying seven kills with a .667 attack percentage. Samantha Bruno notched six kills, Micah Hammond totaled four kills with two blocks, and Kiani Rayford added three kills and a pair of blocks. 

Ashia Joseph racked up 28 assists, three kills, and a team-high 10 digs. Veronica Sanchez dug out nine balls, while Brandi Brucato posted seven digs and two service aces. 

East Bay is back home next weekend, but first they travel to Seaside for a Wednesday night showdown with Cal State Monterey Bay.
