Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay men's soccer suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Humboldt State on Friday night in both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener. Braxton Griffin scored the game-winner in the third minute of overtime after teammate Andre Bernal kept the play alive saving the ball near the end line.
"I liked the way we started the match. We were in their end a lot tonight," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "Our restarts were poorly executed early on and we should have done better."
A palpable atmosphere under the lights at Pioneer Stadium grew into frustration for both teams as neither was able to score in regulation. After halftime the pace of play and intensity elevated to new levels with the squads combining for 19 shots taken and seven cards having to be issued.
In the latter portion of the second half but team's scrambled to preserve a clean sheet. HSU's Cam Spencer sacrificed his body to stop a
Javier Martin shot near the penalty kick spot, and CSUEB's
Trevor Ross stopped a certain goal from Kenji Murao in the 82nd minute.
In the opening minute of overtime, HSU's Bernal made a sliding play to keep the ball inbounds. Griffin was waiting at the near right post, turned from arm's length of goal, and scooted home the game-winner. A stunned and frustrated Pioneer squad claimed offside on the play, but it was to no avail.
"It's tough to lose a game at home, especially in overtime. We'll regroup and look to get points out of Sunday's game," stated Coach Cumbo.
Cal State East Bay (3-3-1, 0-1-0 CCAA) will be on the road Sunday, Sept. 28, to face San Francisco State (4-1-2, 0-0-1 CCAA). The Gators played to a scoreless tie with Cal State Stanislaus on Friday.
