East Bay Grinds out 3-3 Tie with Academy of Art

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay responded multiple times to salvage a 3-3 tie with Academy of Art on Wednesday at Crocker Amazon Park. Megan Ravenscroft scored twice with her second coming in the 84th minute to force extra time.

It was a promising start for Cal State East Bay (2-1-2) as the visiting side took the lead on its first shot of the game in the third minute. Kendra Trifonovitch gained possession at midfield and led the sprinting Ravenscroft down the right side of the pitch.

The team's leading scorer saw daylight and took aim at the Academy of Art (0-4-1) goal. Ravenscroft blasted it low and inside the near post for the opening score.

"In warmups I was taking a lot of good shots and felt good. Early on I saw the front post open and hit a good shot," said Ravenscroft who played 88-of-110 minutes despite feeling less than full strength.

Academy of Art's Rea Laudat had scored the only goal in four previous matches this season. She would add two more to her total and play a part in all three Urban Knight goals on the day.

Laudat responded less than six minutes after her squad surrendered the opening goal.  She and teammate Louise Fillingham both scored with high arching, long range shots beyond the 18-yard box and centered on goal to take a 2-1 lead near the midway point of the first half.

AAU's Kendall Halliburton nearly made it three unanswered goals for the home side as her 44th minute attempt hit the inside of the right post and crossed the face of goal before being cleared. It was a dramatic conclusion to a first half in which Academy of Art led in a contest for the first time this season.

An inspired Pioneer squad took control out of halftime maintaining possession near the Academy of Art goal throughout the opening minutes. Midfielder Mindy Castro capitalized on a loose ball, making a run down the left side while taking on and evading a pair of defenders. Her inward swinging cross near the endline connected with Sara Silva, who placed it for Alyssa Rodriguez to finish.

Academy of Art flipped the script just past the hour mark earning four corner kicks and taking four shots over the final 22 minutes of regulation. The constant pressure paid off as Rea Laudat powered home a loose ball inside the penalty area.

Again the Pioneers had the answer as Ravenscroft collected the rebound off a blocked attempt from Castro. The score forced overtime as the sophomore surpassed her scoring total from a year ago with her team-high fourth goal of the year.

"I feel like we didn't play to our strengths as much as we should have today. I like the way we fought after falling behind, but we are disappointed in the tie."

Academy of Art nearly missed the win with three shots connecting with the framework of the East Bay goal. Laudat was a few inches away from a hat trick as her 80th minute strike smacked the crossbar. The junior had a big day with two goals and an assist as the Urban Knights earned their first point of the season.

East Bay goalkeeper Selena Braun made six saves and has made six or more stops in each of the past three games. Rachael Rampe stopped three shots for Academy of Art.

"I'm happy with the response to the goals against us and this team's perseverance. I'm excited to get back on our home field. I am confident this team is ready to turn the corner on their level of play," said Head Coach Amy Gerace.

Cal State East Bay will host Chaminade (0-2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 20. It is the first of a 3-match homestand which includes Hawaii Hilo (Sept. 23) and Humboldt State (Sept. 26).
