TEMPE, Ariz.
– Cal State East Bay's Lauren McGlory and Chanelle Norwood concluded the Pioneer track and field team's two-day performance in Arizona by competing at the Sun Angel Classic on Saturday.

Facing Division I competition and windy conditions, McGlory failed to reach the finals in the long jump and triple jump, as did Norwood in the long jump. McGlory already has a school record and NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 41'10.5 in the triple jump this year.

"Lauren and Chanelle had to contest with a strong head wind that caused them some problems on the runway," Pioneer head coach Ralph Jones said. "Chanelle had a breakthrough, however, and did some good things that I'm optimistic about."

East Bay also received solid individual efforts from Imani Heath, Corryn Barney, and Suzanne Bateson at the Mesa Classic on Friday night. Heath led the way for the Pioneers with a fourth-place performance in the 5,000 Meters. Defeating seven competitors in the race, she was timed in 19:26.73.

Barney and Bateson both posted times under 60 seconds in the 400 Meters. Competing against 11 runners, Barney finished in 59.50 to place fourth, recording the 14th-best time in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Bateson finished close behind in fifth place with a season-best mark of 59.72, which ranks 16th in the CCAA.

"After taking the early lead, Imani had some difficulties breathing in the dry desert air, and she faded a bit midway through the 5000, ending up in fourth place," Jones noted. "In the 400 Meters, Corryn and Suzanne ran season-best times. All three ladies represented the program remarkably."

"This Arizona trip was another important step for us as we continue to regionally promote the program, while allowing our athletes to experience a championship atmosphere in foreign territory with unfamiliar conditions," Jones added. "Now the focus and excitement turns to our conference, as we prepare for our final regular season meet next week at home."

The Pioneer men's and women's teams will compete next weekend, April 18-19, at Chabot College in the first Cal State East Bay/Chabot Legacy Track & Field Meet
