TURLOCK, CALIF. – Lauren McGlory posted a double victory in the jumps, while
Will Weekes took sixth place in the 5000 Meters to highlight the Pioneer women's and men's track teams' performance at the Kim Duyst Invitational on Saturday. The season-opening meet was held at the Al Brenda Track on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus.
Competing against a strong head wind, McGlory, a former prep standout at James Logan High School, captured the long jump with a leap of 5.17 meters. She then leaped 11.80 meters to claim victory in the triple jump. Her triple jump distance is currently ranked 26th in the nation and stands as the third-longest in Pioneer history.
McGlory teamed with Suzanne Bateson, Chanelle Nowood, and Corryn Barney to win the team's section and place third overall in the 4 x 100 meter relay. The foursome was timed in 48.87.
Other top performances by the Pioneer women's track team included
Imani Heath (4:56 in the 1500 Meters),
Celina Vera (19:08 in the 5000 Meters), and Barney (13.88 in the 100 Meters).
On the men's side, Weekes completed the 5000 Meters in 15:20 to take sixth place in a very competitive field.
Jose Gonzalez-Mejia turned in a solid effort in the 5000 Meters as well, while
Austin Brown led the Pioneers in the sprints with a strong showing in the 400 Meters (55.53).
"I was pleased with the way every athlete competed today," Pioneer head coach
Ralph Jones said. "The winds were a factor, but we can't control the weather." It was great to see other coaches approach me and compliment the way our athletes competed. We're starting to look like a team."
