Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in three sets Friday night on the road at Sonoma State (21-25, 16-25, 18-25). The Pioneers (9-15, 6-13 CCAA) put up a good fight against the first-place Seawolves (17-5, 15-3 CCAA), but ultimately suffered their seventh straight road defeat.
East Bay played Sonoma tight in the first set, as seniors
Amber Hall and
Samantha Bruno both had success on the attack. Midway through the frame, the Seawolves went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to nine points. The Pioneers battled back, however, and got within four points, forcing a pair of SSU timeouts before the home team eventually held on for the win. CSUEB fell short despite hitting .324 in the set.
Game two was also close in the early going as the teams spent the first half of the set trading points. But with the score 15-13, outside hitter Kelsey Hull led Sonoma State on a 10-3 run to close out the frame and give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. Hull finished the match with 18 kills to lead all players.
After the break, the Seawolves were able to finish off the sweep with an eight-point win in game three. Once again, the Pioneers played them close, but they were never able to make an extended scoring run to take over the lead. With the score 18-16 in favor of SSU, the Seawolves won four straight points and then finished off the match, crushing any hopes of a Pioneer rally.
"Other than Amber and Sam, we struggled offensively," said head coach
Jim Spagle. "Our block was not at its best, nor was our serve receive. I thought our back court defense did all they could to keep us in the match, but we made too many errors in trying to adjust our block to a variety of Sonoma approach angles."
CSUEB racked up 43 digs in the matches, but Sonoma bested them in attack percentage (.300 to .080), kills (41 to 28), and blocks (11 to 5).
Hall led the Pioneers with 10 kills on the night. The team's leading scorer made just three attack errors and scooped out eight digs. Bruno finished with eight kills, and
Micah Hammond paced the squad with four total blocks.
Setter
Ashia Joseph tallied 23 assists, three kills, and a team-high three service aces. She entered the weekend second in the conference in that category.
In the back row,
Angie Maina led the way with 14 digs. Fellow defensive specialists
Brandi Brucato and
Veronica Sanchez added eight and seven digs, respectively.
East Bay will look to snap its road skid on Saturday night in the team's final match of the season away from Pioneer Gym. They visit SF State with first serve at 7 p.m. in "The Swamp."
