Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Three unanswered goals capped off a 3-1 comeback victory for Cal State East Bay women's soccer over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon inside Pioneer Stadium.
Rachel Armstrong scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the first half en route to the win.
Cal State Monterey Bay (5-4-0, 2-2-0 CCAA) controlled the action early on and fired off seven shots before Cal State East Bay (5-4-2, 2-2-0 CCAA) took its first of the match. CSUMB's Regan Porteous took the lead pass from Kristen Womack, dribbled around the sliding East Bay goalkeeper, and opened the scoring in the 19th minute.
The Pioneers have been a strong second half team scoring 14-of-18 goals after the opening 45 minutes this season. East Bay got started earlier than usual today scoring two first half goals for the first time in 11 matches this season.
Armstrong headed home goals in the 30th and 38th minutes after receiving lengthy passes from teammates. The first came on a close range attempt as
Sara Yamasaki returned an original long corner kick back into the box.
Janelle Herrera's free kick from just outside the opposition's side of the midfield circle glanced off the head of Armstrong from 18 yards out and over the CSUMB goalkeeper.
"We are a very good set piece team. Both were great services…When we have those opportunities, we take advantage of them," said Armstrong. "When Sara served it back in, I ran to the near post. It barely touched me, but it went in. On Janelle's free kick, I didn't think it was going to go in. I just flicked it and saw it go over the keeper's hand."
As has been the norm, Cal State East Bay scored its 14th second half goal in 11 matches courtesy of
Alyssa Rodriguez. A loose ball inside the center-left portion of the 18-yard box was touched by
Andrea Hernandez.
Megan Ravenscroft chipped it towards the middle and found Rodriguez who finished with the team's third goal from a header in the game.
"Armstrong was aggressive in the box and A-Rod continues to make an impact on the field," said Head Coach
Amy Gerace of the East Bay goal scorers. "Although it's easy to mention them, today was truly a team effort with everyone doing their part."
Selena Braun went the distance and made all six of her saves in the opening half of play. She was kept busy throughout the match as Cal State Monterey Bay attempted 18 shots, led by four apiece from Porteous and Shoshana Wangerin.
"I'm so excited about this win today. I can't wait to get back on the field with them and prepare for our trip to Southern California," Gerace concluded.
Cal State East Bay will hit the road to face Cal Poly Pomona (6-4-0, 1-3-0 CCAA) on Friday, Oct. 10.
