Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team picked up an impressive four-set victory over visiting Chico State on Saturday night (25-13, 25-16, 20-25, 25-23). Combined with last night's win, it's the first time the Pioneers (7-13, 4-11 CCAA) have swept a weekend during California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
The Pioneers hit .293 for the match, their highest attack percentage of the season against a conference opponent. They committed just 12 attack errors in the entire match and racked up 11 aces at the service line. "The first two games was the best we've played this season," said head coach
Jim Spagle. "We executed our game plan really well, and then managed to hang on there at the end. It's exciting to see what this team is capable of when we're clicking on all cylinders."Â
East Bay stormed out of the gate in the first set and grabbed a commanding lead at 18-8. They took advantage of some Wildcat mistakes and pulled away for the convincing victory, as Chico managed just an .036 attack percentage.Â
It was more of the same in game two as the Pioneers clung to the momentum. The visitors kept the score tighter, but once East Bay went on a three-point run to take the lead at 10-8, they never looked back. Senior
Amber Hall racked up seven kills in the frame, leading the team to a nine-point win.Â
The Wildcats were reeling a bit heading into intermssion, but they rallied with their backs against the wall in game three, out-hitting the Pioneers .267 to .206 and extending the match with a five-point win.Â
They moved to the fourth set, and Chico continued to have more and more success on the attack, so the score stayed extremely tight. The lead changed hands several times as the Wildcats tried to force a fifth set, but East Bay showed tremendous fortitude to close out the match. Trailing by two at 21-19, the Pioneers won three straight points to grab the advantage thanks to a kill and a block by freshman
Micah Hammond. After Chico tied it, senior
Samantha Bruno slammed back-to-back kills to put the Pioneers in match point, and Hall recorded the final kill for the win.
Hall had a huge match, posting a double-double with 19 kills and 17 digs to go along with three aces. She hit .349 and finished as the match's leading scorer. Bruno also reached double figures in kills with 11, and she made just two attack errors.Â
Setter
Ashia Joseph was a key to East Bay's offensive success, filling up the score with 45 assists, nine digs, and a pair of aces. She also scored five kills with a .556 hitting percentage.Â
Junior libero
Angie Maina notched yet another career high, anchoring the back line with 28 digs. Senior
Veronica Sanchez also impressed, tallying 11 scoops.Â
In the middle, Hammond totaled five kills without an attack error and led the Pioneers with three total blocks.
Jovan Turner racked up nine kills and hit .389. Fellow freshman Brando Brucato came off the bench to frustrate the Wildcats with three service aces.Â
Cal State East Bay now has little time to celebrate perhaps their best win of the season, as they're back in action this Tuesday night. The team hosts Cal State Monterey Bay for "Taco Tuesday", with first serve set for 7 p.m.Â
