Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in straight sets at UC San Diego on Saturday night to conclude their weekend road trip (23-25, 19-25, 16-25). It marks the sixth straight three-set loss for the Pioneers (5-11, 2-9 CCAA) since the team picked up its lone road victory of the season at Cal state Dominguez Hills.
East Bay posted its highest hitting percentage (.220) and fewest attack errors (12) in eight maches, but it wasn't enough to overcome an impressive performance by the Tritons (10-5, 8-3 CCAA), who hit .318 as a team with 53 kills and 50 digs.
The Pioneers started the match with a high intensity level and played a strong first set, hitting .318. The squads traded points in the early going, and every time UCSD made a mini-run, the Pioneers were able to counter. After a kill by
Micah Hammond, they held a 17-16 lead, but the Tritons rattled off seven of the next eight points to grab a 23-18 advantage. East Bay still refused to quit and won four straight points to stay alive, but Caitlin Brenton recorded the final kill for UCSD in a two-point win.
The second frame followed a similar script, with the lead changing hands several times. Once again, the Pioneers held a 17-16 lead, but the Tritons showed their ability to close by claiming nine of the last 11 points to pull away with another set victory.
The home team continued their momentum following the intermission and ran away with game three. UCSD made an early run to take a 14-8 advantage and never looked back. They hit .364 as a team and held the Pioneers to a .139 percentage as they completed the sweep.
Hammond notched eight kills and led the team with five total blocks and a .462 attack percentage.
Amber Hall paced the squad with nine kills to go along with four digs and three blocks.
Ashia Joseph tallied five kills, six digs, and a team-high 22 assists. Fellow setter
Veronica Fabiano added 10 assists and six scoops.
Angie Maina totaled 11 digs to lead the Pioneers, and
Kiani Rayford and
Samantha Bruno each posted six kills.
The Pioneers will look to improve upon their 1-6 road record next weekend as they venture on their longest trip of the season (in terms of miles) and begin their second swing through the California Collegiate Athletic Association. On Thursday, Oct. 16, East Bay heads north to take on Humbold State, and then on Saturday, Oct. 18, the team flies south to visit No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino.
