Box Score POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team lost in straight sets on the road Friday night at Cal Poly Pomona (18-25, 22-25, 24-26). It's the fifth straight loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play for the Pioneers (5-10, 2-8 CCAA) and drops their record to 1-5 away from Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Broncos (7-6, 5-5 CCAA) defended their home court by besting East Bay in attack percentage (.271 to .189), kills (49 to 36), digs (44 to 31), and blocks (9 to 4) for the match.
The home team opened the night with an early run, winning five straight points to take a 10-7 lead in the first set. They never looked back from there, hanging on for a relatively easy victory in game one.
The Pioneers bounced right back in the second frame, jumping out to an 11-4 lead as freshman
Veronica Fabiano served the team to five straight points. CPP slowly clawed back, however, and went on a late scoring run to take control of the set. With East Bay ahead 16-12, the Broncos claimed seven straight points to take their first lead. The Pioneers got back within one point at 23-22, but Pomona recorded a pair of kills to close out the set.
Despite trailing 2-0 after a heartbreaker in game two, CSUEB refused to roll over. The team came out of intermission and played its best set of the match, hitting .305 with just one attack error. The squads traded points throughout the frame, but the Pioneers managed to hang onto a narrow lead most of the way. They looked to be in good position to extend the match with a 20-15 lead. But after Pomona called a timeout, they came back out and won six out of seven points to tie the score at 21-21.
Amber Hall recorded a kill with the Pioneers facing match point to make it 24-24, but once again the Broncos captured the final two points to close out the win.
Hall paced the squad with nine kills to go along with five digs.
Kiani Rayford tallied eight kills and two blocks and hit .263 for the match.
Jovan Turner added seven kills with a .357 attack percentage.
Samantha Bruno scored six kills and extended her program record with a pair of blocks.
