Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay volleyball team was defeated by visiting Humboldt State in four sets on Saturday night (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20). The Jacks (7-4, 2-2 CCAA) out-hit the Pioneers (6-6, 2-2 CCAA) .164 to .114 for the match as the teams combined to make 55 attack errors. East Bay has now posted a 1-1 record in each of the first two weekends of CCAA play.

Hannah Bell, Suzy Ni Xu, and Samantha Bruno each had 11 kills to lead East Bay. Bell also pulled off a double-double, adding 12 digs as one of the bright spots for CSUEB. Ashley Owen had a match-high 18 kills for HSU.

Setter Ashia Joseph filled up the score sheet with 39 assists, six kills, 16 digs, and a team-best four total blocks. Libero Veronica Sanchez racked up 26 digs to go along with five assists. Katie Allen had five kills for the Pioneers, and Amber Hall added four kills and 12 digs.

"Hannah played great for us coming off the bench, but overall I was disappointed with the team's performance," said head coach Jim Spagle. "We need to improve our consistency on a night-to-night basis."

After playing three excellent sets to secure a win on Friday night, the East Bay attackers could not find the same groove tonight, and the team struggled with its attack efficiency throughout the match. The Jacks ended up with 11 total blocks and also tallied seven service aces.

The first game set the tone for the match, as the Pioneers made 11 attack errors and hit .023. The score was actually tied 14-14 midway through the set, but Humboldt went on an 8-2 run to take the lead for good.

The second set wasn't pretty either, with CSUEB and HSU combining for just 18 kills and 17 attack errors. Once again the score was tight early, and the Pioneers actually held a 17-14 lead with a chance to grab the momentum. The Jacks countered, however, and won 12 of the final 15 points to secure another set victory.

East Bay cut its attack errors in half in the third set and rallied to claim their first set win. This time, the Pioneers led the entire way and were able to hold off a late run by the Jacks. Xu stepped up for CSUEB, recording kills on the team's final three points.

East Bay couldn't complete the comeback, however, as Humboldt came back to win the fourth set. The Pioneers found themselves in an early 9-4 hole, and it took nearly the entire set to erase that deficit. A furious late rally by East Bay gave them five straight points and tied the score at 20-20, and for a minute it looked like we were headed for five sets. But the Jacks won the final five points, four of which were kills by Owen, to escape Hayward with a four-set win.
