PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Â Senior
Daniel Damian led the way for the Pioneer men's cross country team at the 2013 Stanford Invitational on Saturday. Competing against 243 runners from Division I, II, III, and the NAIA, Damian finished in 169th place. He took 69th among non-Division I competition and averaged a 5:36 mile pace to finish the 8K course in 27:50. The East Palo Alto native placed ahead of five CCAA runners and 20 Division I competitors.
Jose Gonzalez-Mejia was the next Pioneer finisher in 76th (non-Division I) and 184th place overall with a time of 28:09. Gonzalez-Mejia improved his time by 50 seconds from his last race at the UC Riverside Invitational.Â
"As a team, we ran a lot better than the Riverside Invitational," said head coach
Ralph Jones said. "Both Daniel and Jose ran a more complete race this time. They ran the race the way we wanted them to."
Sophomore
Gavin Ramos finished 87th with a time of 28:45. Freshmen
Irvin Parada (99th) and
Kyle Fetter (102nd) were clocked in 29:56 and 31:14, respectively, to round out the Pioneers' performance.
Cal State East Bay collectively finished in 15th place among non-Division I schools. The team will compete in the Stanislaus Invitational next Saturday in Turlock, Caif.Â
