Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay volleyball team defeated visiting Cal Poly Pomona (3-8, 1-2 CCAA) in four sets on Friday night (21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15). It was the sixth win in the last seven matches for the Pioneers (6-5, 2-1 CCAA), who improve to 6-1 at home on the season.

Amber Hall, Katie Allen, and Kitona Offord each had 10 kills to lead East Bay. Offord hit .348 with three total blocks, Allen posted a .409 hitting percentage to go along with eight digs, and Hall added nine scoops. Samantha Bruno gave an impressive performance as well, totaling six kills, five digs, three total blocks, and a .545 attack percentage.

Libero Veronica Sanchez continued to be a vacuum in the back row, racking up 33 of the team's 70 digs. The junior has averaged just under nine digs per set over the last three matches. Setter Ashia Joseph, meanwhile, notched 38 assists and added 10 digs. The Pioneers out-hit the Broncos .276 to .162 for the match, committing 13 attack errors to CPP's 24. East Bay was also dominant from the service line, increasing their CCAA-leading total with 12 aces.

"We played well as a team after the first set, particularly in serve receive," said head coach Jim Spagle after the match. "Veronica was a machine, and Kitona, Katie, and Amber carried us offensively. Our passing was also much improved in the second, third, and fourth sets. It was a good team effort overall."

The Pioneers did not get off to a great start, hitting just .108 in the first set. The Broncos went on a four-point run to go ahead 10-5 and force an early East Bay timeout, and they held the lead the rest of the way. The Pioneers cut their deficit to one at 19-18 after forcing a pair of attack errors, but CPP rallied to win the next four points to pull away and take the first set.

That seemed to be the wake-up call the Pioneers needed, because they dominated the match the rest of the way. The team bounced back to hit .391 in the second frame and made just seven attack errors total in the final three sets. They once again fell behind early as the Broncos grabbed a 10-6 lead. But East Bay rattled off seven straight points to take a 14-11 advantage, and they didn't look back from there, winning nine of the final 12 points in set.

With the match even, the Pioneers took control as Cal Poly struggled with its attack efficiency. CSUEB led for the entire third set, and neither team was able to make a run of more than three straight points. East Bay built it advantage up to seven at 19-12 and ended up cruising to the 25-19 victory.

The fourth game was the Pioneers' most impressive of the night. They totaled 15 kills without making an attack error, good for a .441 team hitting percentage. Allen served East Bay to a quick 5-1 lead, and then a seven-point Pioneer run made the score 12-5. The home team never looked back from there, and the final score of 25-15 was their largest lead of the set. Everyone got in on the action for the Pioneers, as Hall, Allen, Bruno, and Suzy Ni Xu all recorded multiple kills to close out the match.
