Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team suffered a cruel fate at Pioneer Stadium on Sunday afternoon when Sonoma State's Raspreet Sandhu ended a scoreless game in double overtime. The freshman scored his first collegiate goal from 12 yards out finding the back right of the net for the game-winner.
"Our guys put in a good effort today. It was an even game and I was happy with the chances we created," said Pioneers Head Coach
Andy Cumbo.
Cal State East Bay (0-6-0, 0-4-0 CCAA) created scoring chances throughout the game and put three of its 11 shots on target.
Rica Guerra had a near-miss in the first half and forced one of three saves from Seawolves goalkeeper Beau Diaz in the second frame.
Sonoma State (4-1-1, 3-1-0 CCAA) sits atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings following Sunday's result. SSU's Brenton Frame controlled a loose ball and passed it back to Sandhu. His right footed strike found the upper 90 of the Pioneers net to end the game.
Five of the Pioneers six losses this season have been by only a single goal. CSU East Bay was only 150 seconds away from earning their first point in league play.
"We need to score when we have the momentum," commented Cumbo. "That is the missing piece right now, and the key to our success."
Bryce Bookhamer made three saves for the Pioneers. On the season he is averaging 1.42 goals against per game in league play.
Cal State East Bay continues CCAA play at home on Friday, Sept. 27, against No. 25 nationally ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (4-1-0, 2-1-0 CCAA).
