Box Score ARCATA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay freshman
Rachel Robbert ended a scoreless game in double overtime against conference foe Humboldt State with her first collegiate goal on Friday afternoon. She received the pass from teammate
Ariana Gordon in the 105th minute to earn the team's first victory of the season.
It was an ominous start for CSU East Bay (1-4-0, 1-2-0 CCAA) after freshman
Corryn Barney was issued a straight red card in the seventh minute of play. The Pioneers were forced to play with only 10 players over the final 97-plus minutes of the match.
"Despite playing with 10 players we kept working hard," said Head Coach
Amy Gerace. "Our play improved as the game progressed. It is fun to see them get the result after working so hard in practice and during the game."
Gordon started a Pioneers counter attack and dribbled up field before finding Robbert wide on the left side. A solid first touch after receiving the pass, Robbert finished from about 15 yards out scoring the walk-off winner.
Humboldt State (3-2-0, 1-2-0 CCAA) controlled the first half action firing off 10 shots to only three for the Pioneers. The Pioneers were outshot 21-14 overall, but the two squads each attempted 11 shots following halftime.
"We made some mistakes defensively in the first half but fortunately did not get punished with a goal. Our performance in the second half and into overtime was much better," commented Gerace.
The Jacks put 8-of-21 shots on target with East Bay goalkeeper
Donna Williams preserving the shutout. Friday was the third contest this season she has recorded eight or more saves en route to her fourth career solo shutout.
The defensive unit has held the opposition scoreless over the last 172 minutes of game action. It is also the first time this season the Jacks have been shut out. HSU had averaged nearly two goals per game entering Friday's match.
HSU goalkeeper Kelly Lukas made six saves in the loss. Maddi Null, Lizzie Mitchell, and Colette Behen combined to take 16 of the team's 21 shots.
CSUEB will face a tough test on the road Sunday, Sept. 22, when it faces National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) No. 15 nationally ranked and unbeaten Sonoma State (4-0-1, 2-0-1 CCAA).
