HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's soccer was on the short end of a 1-0 decision to Cal State San Bernardino in Sunday afternoon's conference matchup at Pioneer Stadium. Coyotes freshman Paige Kang's first ever collegiate goal was the game-winner against the Pioneers.
CSU San Bernardino (3-2-0, 1-1-0 CCAA) scored the lone goal off a set piece in the 22nd minute. Senior Carissa Kutkowski served an inward swinging corner kick to the near post. Kang's near side header snuck inside the near post and the Coyotes made the goal stand up through regulation.
The CSU East Bay (0-4-0, 0-2-0 CCAA) defense held the CSUSB offense to just three shots in the game. The Pioneers created several premium scoring chances and outshot the Coyotes 9-3 overall.
"I was pleased with our overall effort," said East Bay Head Coach Amy Gerace. "We are progressing…But we need to be more disciplined in our defending third of the field."
Freshman Corryn Barney flashed her speed throughout the game and provided the team's best scoring chance with 15 minutes remaining. Barney outsprinted her defender down the right and fired a shot to the near side post from inside 10 yards. It was turned away by CSUSB goalkeeper Chelsey Jones who picked her third solo shutout of the season.
"Our team did a good job of getting Corryn the ball in the second half," said Gerace. "Our reserves played especially well and kept up our strong level of play."
Cal State East Bay will be on the road for its next pair of contests. The Pioneers will take on Humboldt State (3-1-0, 1-1-0 CCAA) on Friday, Sept. 20, at 12:30 p.m.
