Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) at home on Friday falling to No. 18 ranked Chico State, 2-1.
Rey Suarez converted a second half penalty kick to tie the game for his first score of the season.
The consistent pressure by the front line of Chico State (3-0-0, 1-0-0 CCAA) was rewarded in the 39th minute. Luke Plummer found teammate Elliott Plummer from 10 yards out and between the posts. Plummer's right-footed blast found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
"We had a really slow start to the game," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "Once we settled into the game we became more dangerous."
Cal State East Bay (0-3-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) went on the attack early in the second half and
Rey Suarez's run was rewarded. The junior forward was taken down in the penalty area and awarded a penalty kick. Suarez's strike to the near post tied the game at the 59:30 mark.
A foul from about 25 yards out off the left corner of the penalty area created a set play opportunity for the Wildcats. Octavio Guzman's inward curling ball inside 10 yards found the feet of Justin Walmsley who put away the eventual game-winner.
The Pioneers have been on the short end of three one-goal decisions to start the 2013 campaign. Two of those have come against top-20 nationally ranked programs.
"Chico State is a very good team and they capitalized on our mistakes. We have learned a lot over the past few games and will continue to improve going forward," said Cumbo.
Cal State East Bay will host Cal State San Bernardino (2-0-2, 0-0-0 CCAA) on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 11:30 a.m.
