HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay's head volleyball coach
Jim Spagle has announced the signing Veronica Fabiano to highlight his 2014 recruiting class. Fabiano, a 5'10" setter from Scottsdale, Ariz., has had a standout prep career on the court and in the classroom. She recorded the second-most assists in the history of Desert Mountain High School and will be eligible to compete as a true freshman for the Pioneers in 2014.
"Veronica brings a competitive intensity and focus to our program that I believe will be contagious," said Spagle. "She is a natural leader, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to coach, mentor, and develop her in all walks of life for the next for years. Veronica is a very important piece to our foundation for the future of East Bay volleyball."
Fabaino has been a starter at the setter position for three seasons on the Desert Mountain varsity team, and she served as the team captain as a senior. She led the squad in assists each of the past two seasons, averaging 4.3 per set as a junior and 7.1 per set as a senior. Fabiano also posted a .488 attack percentage in 2013 along with 2.2 digs per set and a team-best 54 service aces. She was named team MVP and selected as an All-City honoree following her senior season.
"Veronica is the total package of power, speed, brains, and a ferocious competitor," said her longtime coach Shasta Millhollan. "She outplays her height with these intangibles."
An excellent student, Fabiano holds a 3.75 gpa in her final year of high school. She has also won the volleyball team's Scholar-Athlete award each of the last two years. Fabiano plans to major in political science and intends to focus on a pre-law curriculum with the objective of attending law school upon graduating from CSUEB.
