Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team notched an impressive four-set victory over visiting Cal State L.A. on Friday night (19-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-18). The Pioneers (10-14, 6-10 CCAA) have now won three straight matches and run their record on Fridays at home to 6-0. It's the third straight loss for the Golden Eagles (14-10, 9-7 CCAA).
East Bay out-hit CSULA .284 to .190 and posted its best team attack percentage in a conference match all season. The Pioneers forced 27 attack errors while making just 18, and they out-blocked the Golden Eagles 8 to 2.
"We were able to figure something out with our right side block against L.A.'s top two attackers," said head coach
Jim Spagle. "That allowed us to make a comeback, and it was really the key to the match. We showed a lot of toughness tonight."
Several members of the Pioneer squad turned in impressive performances.
Katie Allen hit .355 and led the team with 14 kills. She also had two aces and four solo blocks, a season high.
Samantha Bruno was outstanding in the middle, posting 10 kills without an error for a .526 attack percentage.Â

Ashia Joseph tallied five kills in six attempts to go along with 43 assists and five digs. Pioneer libero
Veronica Sanchez led all players with 21 digs in the match.Â
Amber Hall had 11 kills and six digs.
Kitona Offord hit .292 with nine kills.
Suzy Ni Xu added seven kills, while
Hannah Bell (five digs) and
Angie Maina (four digs) came off the bench to provide solid back line play.Â
The Pioneers hit .148 and had just nine total kills in the first set as Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the match. They fell behind 21-16 in the second set after a 9-2 run by the Golden Eagles, and prospects looked grim at Pioneer Gym. However, Sanchez proceeded to serve East Bay to seven straight points as they stormed back to take the lead. A kill by Bruno secured the three-point Pioneer victory to even the match.
East Bay had the momentum heading into the third frame, but once again they found themselves trailing late. Both teams were efficient on the attack, but the Golden Eagles took a 20-17 advantage on one of Iona Lofrano's 20 kills. The Pioneers rallied back to tie the score, and then took a 24-23 lead on consecutive kills by Hall.
Both teams had a chance at set point, but East Bay finally made its winning move whle trailing 27-26. A kill from Bruno, followed by two straight from Allen, gave CSUEB a thrilling win that sent the Pioneer faithful into a frenzy. CSULA lost despite hitting .340 in the set in part because the Pioneers posted a remarkable .409 attack percentage.
After winning the crucial third set, East Bay was able to put the Golden Eagles away with a much less dramatic fourth game. The Pioneers hit .333 and forced nine Cal State L.A. attack errors, taking a 12-6 lead early and never looking back. The visitors got within three points at 18-15, but East Bay was able to win six of the final eight points to close out yet another Friday home victory.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday night when Cal State Dominguez Hills rolls into Hayward for a 7 p.m. match.Â
