Pioneers Cruise Past Cal Poly Pomona in Straight Sets

11/2/2013 9:02:00 PM

Box Score POMONA, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team earned a decisive three-set victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night (25-19, 25-19, 25-14). With the win, the Pioneers (9-14, 5-10 CCAA) complete a season sweep of the Broncos (10-14, 8-8 CCAA) and secure their first 2-0 weekend in conference play this season.

The Pioneers played perhaps their cleanest match of the season. They out-hit their opponents in every set and bested the Broncos .250 to .144 for the match. They also topped CPP in total kills (46 to 35), assists (40 to 33), and digs (61-58). East Bay racked up eight service aces, while committing two service errors and just one reception error.

"Tonight was a culmination of all the hard work and effort theese ladies have sacrificed over the last few months, said head coach Jim Spagle."The confident, resilient, detemrined expressions on their faces was something I'll never forgot. This season has been a work in progress, but tonight the Pioneers believed!"

Samantha Bruno led all players with 12 kills and posted a .429 attack percentage. Setter Ashia Joseph tallied 37 assists, 10 digs, and four kills. Libero Veronica Sanchez had a monster night, totaling 27 digs (an average of 9.0 per set).

Kitona Offord notched eight kills and hit .333. Amber Hall also had eight kills in the match to go along with seven scoops and a team-high three aces. Fellow outside hitter Katie Allen posted seven kills, and Suzy Ni Xu added six.

After picking up their first road win of the season on Thursday at Humboldt State, the Pioneers were looking to continue that momentum tonight, but they actually trailed early in the first set. Pomona took a 13-10 advantage before Offord slammed home back-to-back kills to start a 5-0 run. The Broncos won a couple points back, but East Bay answered by winning four straight to take a 21-16 lead. The Pioneers closed out the set from there, with Bruno notching the game-winning kill.

CPP jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the second set before Hall served the Pioneers to another 5-0 run. East Bay wasn't able to manage a big scoring run after that, but they also never relinquished the lead after it was 10-9. The Broncos continued to struggle on the attack, and the Pioneers claimed four of the final five points to secure the win.

As was the case in their victory over the Jacks, the Pioneers were able to score the crucial points they needed to finish off sets when the score was close. That wouldn't be necesary in the third frame, however, as CSUEB ran away with an 11-point win. Trailing 4-3 early on, East Bay rattled off a 12-2 run to make the score 15-6. After the Broncos answered with a few points of their own, the Pioneers came right back with a 5-0 run that put the match out of reach for good at 20-9. They ended up hitting an impressive .367 as a team in the final frame.

The Pioneers have now won consecutive matches for the first time since the Route 92 Showdown in September, and they'll look to continue that winning streak when they return home to host Cal State L.A. on Friday, Nov. 8.
