Seawolves Spoil Pioneers ‘Senior Night’

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay's Ariana Gordon scored the final goal at Pioneer Stadium for the 2013 season. However Sonoma State scored three unanswered goals to open Friday's game as the Seawolves spoiled East Bay's "Senior Night" by heading the Pioneers a 3-1 defeat.

"I am proud of our seniors. They play hard and have done so much for this team and program," said Head Coach Amy Gerace in regards to her seniors Donna Williams, Shannon Fontes and Katie Brawley. The trio was recognized during pre-game ceremonies as this was their final home game of their collegiate careers.

Despite being a one-sided affair early on the Pioneers and Seawolves were locked in a scoreless tie heading into the final seconds of the first half. Sonoma State scored with 2.3 seconds left on the clock as Gabby Squarcia put away the rebound off a save from the shot of teammate Lauren Curtin.

Curtin played a major role in Friday's result having an impact on all three Sonoma State (11-3-3, 9-3-3 CCAA) scores. She provided assists on the first two and scored the third herself finishing off a one-on-one scoring chance against the Pioneer keeper. It capped off a three-goal spurt during a stretch of less than 16 minutes of game action.

East Bay would get on the scoreboard in the 68th minute as Ariana Gordon scored her first goal of the season. Teammate Danielle Cummings provided the cross and Gordon redirected the service inside the near upper corner of the goal.

Williams made a game-high seven saves. Fontes played all 90 minutes and if she plays on Sunday will have appeared in every single East Bay contest during her four years with the Pioneers. Brawley played 81-of-90 minutes on Friday.

Cal State East Bay (4-11-2, 4-9-2 CCAA) will be on the road Sunday, Nov. 3, against No. 6 ranked Cal State Stanislaus (15-0-2, 13-0-2 CCAA) to close out the 2013 season.
