Box Score LOS ANGELES --- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in straight sets to Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest on Saturday night (25-19, 25-22, 25-23). It's the sixth straight road loss to open the season for the Pioneers (6-9, 2-5 CCAA), who have dropped four straight overall.
Suzy Ni Xu was outstanding for East Bay, hitting .733 with 12 kills and five digs.
Kitona Offord added six kills, and
Veronica Sanchez tallied 15 digs. The Golden Eagles (9-6, 4-3 CCAA) out-hit the Pioneers .294 to .172 and notched 50 kills to East Bay's 31, although the home team made 11 service errors. Iona Lofrano led the way with 20 kills, and Kymberly Silveyra added 14.
Samantha Bruno had five kills, and
Katie Allen posted three. Setter
Ashia Joseph totaled 20 assists, while
Amber Hall led the team with four total blocks.
The first set was the most one-sided of the match as the Golden Eagles never relinquished the lead after going ahead 7-6. They hit .350 in the frame and scored 20 of their 25 points off kills. The Pioneers, meanwhile, had just nine kills.
East Bay played much better in the second set, posting a .242 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles continued to be superb offensively, however, and the teams traded points the entire game. Trailing 14-11, the Pioneers rattled off a 4-0 run with Xu serving to take their first and only lead at 15-14. The score was tied several times after that, but CSULA won five of the final seven points and outlasted CSUEB by just three.
The Pioneers stepped up defensively in the third set, holding L.A. to a .188 attack percentage. They weren't able to capitalize on offense, however, and hit .097 with just nine kills. Looking to extend the match, East Bay jumped out to a narrow early lead. They made a pair of four-point runs and stretched their advantage out to seven at 21-14. At that point, Cal State L.A. called a time out, and proceeded to mount a huge late comeback to close out the match. The Golden Eagles finished the third set on an 11-2 run and won the last five points after trailing 23-20.
CSUEB's road trip contnues next weekend with two more tough CCAA matches against nationally ranked opponents. The team will visit No. 12 UC San Diego on Friday night and No. 16 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night.
