Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Melissa Garcia of Cal Poly Pomona ended over 104 minutes of scoreless action on Friday night as Cal State East Bay suffered a 1-0 double overtime loss in California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) action at Pioneer Stadium.
Cal Poly Pomona (5-2-2, 3-2-2 CCAA) senior Tatiana Cortes served a cross from left to right and found Garcia just outside the 6-yard box on the far post. Garcia settled the pass and struck a near-post shot into the lower corner for the game-winning golden goal.
"We played a quality game. We had many opportunities in the first half but were unable to capitalize," said East Bay Head Coach
Amy Gerace. "This is a frustrating loss…we will need to refocus and be ready to play on Sunday."
Both teams had numerous chances to score throughout with the Broncos earning a slight 18-13 advantage in shots taken over Cal State East Bay (2-7-0, 2-5-0 CCAA). Pioneers freshman
Corryn Barney had a one-on-one with Broncos goalkeeper Alex Abbott early in the second half. Abbott was able to slide and get a hand on the ball as she charged out from net.
Megan Ravenscroft provided another near-miss attempt when her header went wide of target in the 70th minute. Ravenscroft, Barney, and
Ariana Gordon each had one shot on goal for the Pioneers while the Broncos finished with 10 on target.
CSUEB goalkeeper
Donna Williams made nine saves and now ranks second in the CCAA with 50 stops this season. The senior netminder also ranks third in the league with her .820 save percentage this year.
Cal State East Bay will host UC San Diego (3-3-3, 2-2-3 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m.
