Box Score CHICO, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team dropped its second straight match with a 3-0 road loss to Chico State (10-9, 7-5 CCAA) on Friday night. The Pioneers (7-13, 3-9 CCAA) got nine kills from
Amber Hall, but they didn't have an answer for the Wildcat attackers, who hit .376 for the match.
East Bay posted a team attack percentage of .206, including a solid mark of .275 in the third set, but they were out-hit handily in each of the three games. All in all, Chico State had 45 kills to the Pioneers' 38, as well as 22 total errors to the Pioneers' 30.
Hall hit .320 with five digs to go along with her team-leading nine kills.
Samantha Bruno posted a .412 attack percentage with eight kills and just one error.
Katie Allen and
Kitona Offord also added eight kills apiece for East Bay.
Veronica Sanchez led all players with 14 digs in the three sets. Setter
Ashia Joseph managed 35 assists and five scoops.
Suzy Ni Xu contributed four kills to go along with the only solo block of the night for the Pioneers.
The first set was a game of runs as the Wildcats opened up with an 8-2 lead. East Bay countered with a 10-2 run to go up 12-10, but the Wildcats had the last laugh. With the score tied 16-16, they finished the set on a 9-2 run to win by seven.
The second set was tighter in the early-going, but once again the home team took care of business down the stretch. The Pioneers actually grabbed a 10-7 advantage, but it was all Wildcats from there. Chico out-scored East Bay 18-7 the rest of the way and won by eight thanks to a .522 team attack percentage.
The Pioneers refused to roll over and played by far their best volleyball of the night in the third set. Once again, they jumped out to a lead, winning 10 of the first 15 points. Chico made its scoring run and pulled back ahead 14-13, but the Pioneers rallied back to take a two-point lead on consecutive kills by Hall. The Wildcats came back and won three straight to go up 22-21, but then they made an attack error to even the score up. The teams traded kills, ultimately forcing extra points at 25-25, but the Pioneers couldn't close out a win to extend the match. An East Bay service error followed by an attack error gave Chico the 27-25 victory.
CSUEB is back in action on the road tomorrow night (Saturday) with a 7 p.m. match against Cal State Stanislaus.
