HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's soccer will host the final two matches of a five-game homestand this weekend against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schools Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego. These two squads are currently ranked third and second in the CCAA South Division standings, respectively.
"As always, we face two high quality opponents this weekend. I was happy that the team started the week with a high intensity practice, very focused and ready to prepare for two tough games this weekend," stated CSU East Bay Head Coach
Amy Gerace.
Cal State East Bay-Cal Poly Pomona Match Preview
Cal State East Bay (2-6-0, 2-4-0 CCAA) is coming off its most impressive victory of the season following a 3-0 win over San Francisco State on Sunday. In that game
Sara Silva,
Bekah Anderson, and
Megan Ravenscroft each scored their first goals of the season.
"This team isn't overly reactive to the result of the previous game. We talk a lot about our improvement over the course of a season and they know there is still a lot of work to get done," said Gerace.
The Pioneers are hopeful that they can end a current five-match winless streak (0-4-1) to Cal Poly Pomona (4-2-2, 2-2-2 CCAA) on Friday night. The Broncos will enter Friday coming off a pair of 1-1 draws to No. 16 Sonoma State and Humboldt State.
The Broncos have not scored more than one goal in any of their eight contests this season. However, they have scored in 7-of-8 games and posted four shutouts thus far in 2013. Goalkeeper and recently named starter Alex Abbott started the past three games for the Broncos and is undefeated (1-0-2) while holding the second best save percentage in the conference (.867) among qualifying players.
Allison Sauve leads the Pomona offense with two goals, eight shots on goal, and 13 shots taken this season. Senior Samantha Stiles led the Broncos with nine goals a season ago. This season she is one of five players with one score on the Cal Poly Pomona roster.
Cal State East Bay-UC San Diego Match Preview
UC San Diego (3-2-3, 2-1-3 CCAA) started out this season ranked No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings. The Tritons have steadily dropped out of the top-25 and enter this weekend without a win over their past four matches (0-1-3).
For the second time this season UCSD will face back-to-back nationally ranked opponents when it hits the road to take on No. 9 Cal State Stanislaus on Friday. The Tritons most recently fell 3-2 to No. 16 Sonoma State on Sunday, Sept. 29.
This year the Tritons have scored 11 goals in eight games with seven of those coming from the pair of Cassie Callahan and Jamie Benedetto. Callahan has provided all three game-winning goals this season and finished last year leading the team with 10 goals and eight assists.
Cal State East Bay will take on another strong CCAA goalkeeper in UCSD's Kelcie Brodsky. She ranks second in the conference with 44 saves and has played every second in goal for the Tritons this season. She is holding opponents to 1.04 goals per game in 2013.
UC San Diego has won the past six meetings with Cal State East Bay since the regular season series restarted back in 2009. Most recently the Pioneers held a 2-0 halftime lead before the Tritons forced overtime and eventually scored the game-winner on Oct. 26, 2012.
