HAYWARD, Calif. --- After back-to-back trips to Southern California, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team is back home this weekend to host a pair of Bay Area opponents. No. 11 Sonoma State rolls into Hayward on Friday for "Dig Pink" night at Pioneer Gym, and Saturday night is the "Battle of the Bay" against San Francisco State. The Pioneers (6-11, 2-7 CCAA) are looking to break a six-match losing streak at home where they have accumulated all of their wins this season, going 6-3.
WEEKEND RECAP
Last weekend, East Bay faced two of the nation's top teams on the road. #10 UC San Diego bested the Pioneers in four sets despite
Suzy Ni Xu hitting .325 with 16 kills and
Samantha Bruno hitting .348 with nine kills. The following night, the team traveled up to San Bernardino to take on the #14 Coyotes in their arena, where they've only lost six times since 2008. Bruno notched 10 kills, but the Pioneers were held to a .120 attack percentage, and CSUSB claimed the three-set victory.Â
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
With nearly half the conference schedule in the books, CSUEB currently ranks second in the CCAA in service aces per set and sixth in hitting percentage. They're last, however, in digs and total points. Individually, libero
Veronica Sanchez ranks second in the conference in dig average at 5.30 and service ace average at 0.38 per set.
Xu, the 2012 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, has been excellent this season. She leads the team in kills (2.94 per set) and hitting percentage (.253) and has posted double-digit kills in 11 matches. The Pioneers have four other players averaging better than two kills per set in
Amber Hall (2.24), Bruno (2.04),
Katie Allen (2.02), and
Kitona Offord (2.00).
Ashia Joseph has racked up 9.24 assists per set, which ranks seventh in the conference.
CLIMBING THE CAREER RANKS
With 39 total blocks on the season, Offord now ranks second all-time in Pioneer history with 217. She's just three behind Tanya Wolf (1992-94) for the school record. Bruno also ranks fourth all-time in that category with 195 career blocks.Â
In less than two seasons, Sanchez already has the fourth-most digs in East Bay history with 841 for her career. Lauren Massa's (2007-10) record of 2,226 is probably out of reach, but Sanchez has a realistic shot to climb into second place by season's end.
SCOUTING SONOMA STATE
The Seawolves have won eight straight matches, including five in a row at home without dropping a set. They lead the CCAA in kills per set, aces per set, assists per set, points per set, and hitting percentage. Caylie Seitz (3.86 kills/set, .319 pct.) and Kelsey Hull (3.34 kills/set, .296 pct.) are having big years as Sonoma's top scorers. Hayley Ross and Devin Shaver form a talented duo at the setter position.Â
SCOUTING SF STATE
The Gators have lost three straight matches. They're hitting just .184 as a team and rank ninth in the CCAA in both kills and points per set. SF State has four players averaging better than two kills per set, led by middle blockers Meagan Wright (2.76 kills/set) and Kaileen Mejia (2.69 kills/set, .329 pct.). Setter Jacquie Brice ranks fourth in the conference averaging 10.38 assists for the season.
