HAYWARD - Coming off their two best games of the season, the Pioneer women's soccer team will conclude their six-game CCAA road trip this week with a pair of games against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay. The Pioneers will face San Francisco State on September 28 at 3:00 p.m. East Bay will play Cal State Monterey Bay on September 30 at 11:30 a.m. The Pioneers lost to San Francisco State 1-0 during the 2011 season. East Bay swept a two-game series from Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 and 3-0 last year.

The Pioneers stand in fifth place with a 1-3-1 record. For the season, the Pioneers are 3-3-1. East Bay put together two solid team efforts over the weekend, earning a 1-1 tie with Cal State L.A. and defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1. East Bay has outscored its opponents by a 14-9 margin. The Pioneer backline has been solid allowing four goals in their last four games.

“The team is coming off a great weekend, but now our focus is on the next set of games,” Pioneer Coach Amy Gerace said.  “This team has been very consistent and even in the highs and lows of a game manages to stay focused and not jump on the emotional roller coaster. With that being said, I do feel like getting our first points in the CCAA is motivating for them to keep getting better and continue their success.”

Shianna Falk, coming off a two-goal performance against Cal State Dominguez Hills, is tied for team honors with three goals scored and two assists. Falk is tied for seventh in the CCAA with three goals scored. Kara Yamamoto has scored two goals and four assists in seven games. Eugenie Foote is close behind in scoring honors with seven points on three goals and one assist. Senior Zuly Diaz and freshman Kelsey Lamb have done an outstanding job on the backline. East Bay has received good production from their goalkeepers Nina Cefalo and Jamie Botteon. Cefalo has allowed 1.00 goals a game (7th-CCAA) with 15 saves in five games. Botteon has posted a 3-2 record with 17 saves and a 1.47 goals against average(9th-CCAA).

“Our team does a good job with organizing play and knowing their role within our system of play,” Gerace said.  “Because we have such strong senior leadership, our players know what our style should look like and can make adjustments on their own where needed. Defensively in our last four games, we've given up no more than one goal a game, which we are pleased with. We are now looking to execute offensively and finish the opportunities we create for ourselves.”

San Francisco State is in fourth place in the South Division of the CCAA with a 1-4 record. The Gators are 3-4 for the season. San Francisco State split a pair of CCAA games over the weekend, defeating Cal State San Bernardino while losing to South leader U.C. San Diego 1-0. Nicole Vanni has a team-best two goals in seven games. Goalkeeper Annicia Jones has allowed 1.86 goals a game with 21 saves and one shutout.

Following two road victories over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay stands in third place in the CCAA with a 3-2 record. The Otters are 5-2 overall.  Andrea Davis is tied for seventh in the CCAA with three goals scored. After posting a pair of shutouts over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles, Otter goalkeeper Diana Zambrano has allowed 0.68 goals in five games. Zambrano is third in the CCAA with a .867 save percentage.

“We're looking forward to CSUMB and SFSU,” Gerace said.  “These two teams have very different styles of play. This week we will need to make some minor adjustments but our focus will mostly be improving elements in our game. No doubt both teams this weekend will be very tough competitors and we will need to play at a high level to continue on the success of this past weekend.”
