OAKLAND - The East Bay men's cross country team moved up three places from last years' finish at the Mills College meet to place fourth overall out of eight teams. The Pioneers finished with 90 points.
The Pioneers were led behind the strong running of
Will Weekes who finished third individually in scoring and fifth overall. Weekes completed the 8k course in 28:08.
Following Weekes were teammates Jose Gonzalez (29:13, 12th),
Chris Gallagher (29:50, 21st)
Justin Pryor (30:21, 26th),
John Vergara (30:50, 33rd) and
Orlando Ramirez (31:45, 49th).
The team faced some adversity when top freshmen
Gavin Ramos was pulled from the race early for precautionary reasons, but the Pioneers banded together to move up the team standings without one of their best runners.
"The men did an awesome job of finishing strong after one of their teammates went down,” Jones said. “We wanted to win the meet, but circumstances prevented us from accomplishing that goal, however I am proud of the way the men fought and persevered. We have been working really hard, and this was a training meet for us, but we still have high expectations to perform well. I look for these guys to really run well in the upcoming weeks.”
The Pioneers return to action Sept. 29th at the prestigious Stanford Invitational.
