Pioneers & Warriors Battle to 0-0 Tie

Box Score Turlock, Calif. – For the second straight CCAA match, the Pioneer men's soccer team turned in a total team performance, resulting in a 0-0 tie to host Cal State Stanislaus on September 14.

With the tie, the Pioneers are 0-1-1 in CCAA play and 1-2-1 for the season. Cal State Stanislaus stands at 1-1-1 in the CCAA and 3-1-1 overall.

Cal State Stanislaus had 24 shots, but a tenacious Pioneer defense prevented the Warriors from scoring. The Pioneers had nine shots including two each from Florian Reppin and Timo Baeuerle. East Bay received a tremendous performance from goalkeepers Rene Martinez and Bryce Bookhamer, who recorded four and two saves, respectively.

"The guys put in a great effort for 110 minutes and deserved to walk away with something tonight," Pioneer Coach Andy Cumbo said. "Stanislaus had a lot of long throws where they put a lot of bodies in the box. Our guys did a great job of winning the 1st and 2nd balls on these."  

In the 102nd minute of the second overtime period, a header by the Warriors' Josue Barajas was saved by Bookhamer, who took over for Martinez in the second half of regulation.

Paul Dewhurst had chance to win the game for the Pioneers in the 97th minute of the first overtime, but his shot was saved by Warrior goalkeeper Clint Long. 

In the 49th minute, Reppin had a shot go high over the net. The Warriors would put up five shots during the following 20 minutes, but were unable to find the net.

The Pioneers put good pressure on the Warrior backline in the final 16 minutes of regulation. In the 74th minute, Alex Diosdado shot on goal was saved by Long. Derrek Driggs had a header saved by Long in the 83rd minute. The Pioneers final scoring opportunity in regulation came in the 88th minute as Baeuerle's shot sailed wide of the net.

As the offense was creating scoring opportunities, the Pioneer backline, led by Dewhurst and Kellen Crow, proved tremendous blocking three Warrior scoring chances late in the second half.  In regulation, the Warriors had 20 shots, but were unable to score.

Cal State Stanislaus held an 11-4 advantage in shots through the first half of play.

Reppin had a shot sail wide in the seventh minute. A header by Andres Ponce in 21st minute went wide, while Rey Suarez shot attempt was saved by a Warrior defender nine minutes later. Baeuerle attempt went over the net in the 32nd minute. Martinez turned away four Warrior shots on goal.

"We'll rest up and be ready to play Chico on Sunday," Cumbo said.

Cal State East Bay will travel to Chico State for a September 16 contest against the Wildcats. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
