HAYWARD, Calif. - Following an impressive preseason, the Pioneer men's soccer team is seeking new heights for the 2012 season.
On Aug. 30, the Pioneers will host University of Colorado – Colorado Springs in the 2012 opener for both teams.
“We've had a great pre-season leading to the first regular season match,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “We expect to definitely be more competitive in the CCAA.”
The Pioneers return 11 players, including junior goalkeeper and team captain
Bryce Bookhamer who topped the CCAA in saves (76) and saves per game (4.75).
Rene Martinez, a transfer from San Francisco City College, freshman redshirt
Kramer Gudgeon and
Godwin Agyapong, give the Pioneer stability at goalkeeper.
“We have a talented group of goalkeepers,” Cumbo said. “I felt Bryce and Rene played well in the preseason.”
Coach Cumbo likes what he sees in the Pioneer backfield with the return of
Paul Dewhurst and
Adrian Maldonado along with newcomers
Timo Baeuerle,
Salvador Mendoza,
Jesus Leon and
Scott Dobson.
Sophomore
Javier Martin, who led the Pioneers with five goals in 2011, will return at forward. Martin will have a good supporting cast at forward led by senior captain
Florian Reppin, along with sophomores Christian Lara and
Miguel Padilla. Newcomer
Carlos Barboza from West Valley College, should get his share of scoring opportunities.
“We have forwards who will develop into good goal scorers,” Cumbo said.
The midfield features returning players senior
Andres Ponce, junior Sam Dueñas and sophomores
Rey Suarez and
Conley Perry. Newcomers expected to contribute in the midfield include
Alex Diosdado and Felix Jaeko. Local freshmen
Kellen Crow (Amador Valley High School) and Derrek Driggs (California High School) will see their share of playing time in the midfield.
“Our group of midfielders will make things happen offensively,” Cumbo said. “This will give us major looks in the midfield during our matches this season.”
With the 2012 season quickly approaching, Cumbo is pleased with the direction of the Pioneer men's soccer program.
“Things are going well,” Cumbo said. “We've worked hard to develop a solid men's soccer program at Cal State East Bay.”
