TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay track teams opened the 2012 season at the Kim Duyst Invitational on Saturday, with the men placing sixth and the women claiming ninth in the team standings. The Pioneer women scored team five points and competed in eight events, while the men posted four team points and had competitors in five events at the first meet under Head Coach
Ralph Jones.
On the women's side, Jasmain Mack took ninth in the high jump, posting a height of 4 feet, 6 inches in the finals, while Kaitlyn Smith placed 11th in the event. East Bay also had competitors in the sprints, with Diaji Smith, Kayla Gonzalez and Hazel Gutierrez claiming 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively in the 100 meter dash. Eugenie Foote's 27.93 in the 200 was good for an 18th-place showing, while Jeniffer Polite claimed 20th in the event. Smith also took 11th as the Pioneers' only competitor in the 400.
East Bay's 4x100 relay team of Polite, Foote, Mack and anchor Chelsea Ingram collected the Pioneers' only points of the day, claiming fourth with a 53.93 to pick up five team points.
In the distance events, sophomore Tiffany Duffy placed 15th in the 800, finishing in 2:31.08, while in the 1500, Nastassia Hamor took 21st with a time of 5:22.04. Amanda McNabb took 30th in the 5000, finishing in 19:52.12.
For the men,
Burtland Dixon posted a 23.70 to place 11th out of 21 runners in the 200 meter dash. Kristain Arnold also competed for the Pioneers in the 200, placing 17th. In the distance races,
John Vergara and
Joel Becker placed 18th and 19th, respectively, in the 1500.
The Pioneer men's 4x100 relay team consisted of
Riles Nganga, Dixon, Laron McCoy and
Anthony Gaines and scored the men's only points of the day, finishing fifth to grab four points. McCoy also took 15th in the shot put, posting a throw of 37 feet, 6.5 inches.
Cal State East Bay will look to build on the opening weekend when it heads to the Aggie Open next weekend at UC Davis. The meet is set for 9:30 a.m. on Mar. 10 at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track.
