Cal State East Bay didn't allow a shot on goal over the final 37 minutes and held the Warriors scoreless for the last 71 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net in the narrow loss on Sunday.

Pioneers Play Well in 1-0 Defeat to Cal State Stanislaus

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's soccer team turned in a good performance in a 1-0 defeat to Cal State Stanislaus before 313 fans on Youth Soccer Day at Pioneer Stadium.

With the defeat, the Pioneers are 1-5-3 in CCAA play and 2-6-3 overall. Cal State Stanislaus improves to 4-2-2 in the CCAA and 6-2-2 for the season. The Warriors outshot the Pioneers by a 15-6 margin. Felix Jaekel and Salvador Mendoza each had a shot on goal.

“We had a great turnout with supporters at both games this weekend,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said.
Tenaya Davis did an outstanding job filling the seats for both games.”

The Warriors scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute when Jesse Horta netted his first goal of the season from 17 yards out.

Pioneer goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer took a goal away from Carlos Gavino with a tremendous last second save in the 27th minute.

The Pioneers had two shots on goal during the first half including one on goal by Felix Jaekel.

East Bay defense played tough in the first half led by two interceptions by Timo Baeuerle and a kickout in the Pioneer goal area by Paul Dewhurst.

The Warriors' Jose Ramirez had his shot hit the crossbar with 10 seconds left in the half.

“We came out and had a strong first half, took care of the ball, and combined a lot,” Cumbo said. “Our possession was great and there was a good pace to the game.”

Salvador Mendoza had a shot turned away by Warrior goalkeeper Clint Long in the 47th minute. The Pioneer defense held tough not allowing a shot on goal for the next 37 minutes. East Bay had a final scoring chance in the 72nd minute as Carlos Barboza shot went wide.

Pioneer goalkeeper Rene Martinez turned away a shot by Nolan Holdridge in the 84th minute.

“The second half was totally different than the first,” Cumbo said.  “There was over twenty restarts and there wasn't any flow to the game. The quality of soccer was poor and it was not great for the spectators or the players.”

East Bay will play at Sonoma State on October 11.
