Pioneers Edged by Cal State San Bernardino on Senior Day

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. –  Nina CefaloZuly Diaz, Shianna Falk, Eugenie Foote and Kara Yamamoto were honored as part of  Senior Day on  Sunday. The five seniors played well as the Pioneers lost their final game of the season to Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0.

Cal State East Bay concludes the 2012 campaign with 6-11-1 record. The Pioneers finished 2-11-1 in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino improved to 9-7-2 for the season and 7-7-1 in the CCAA. The Pioneers were outshot 7-6, but had a 3-2 advantage on shots on goal. Cefalo had one save in goal.

“Today was an emotional game for our seniors,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said.  “They have been so consistent and integral in our team and I think we really wanted to play hard for them.”                                                                                                                                                                             

The Pioneers put presure on the Coyotes in the opening minutes of the game. Falk, the Pioneers' leading goal scorer, hooked a shot just wide of the net in the first minute. Shannon Fontes had a shot turned away by Coyote goalkeeper Chelsey Jones at the seven minute mark. Six minutes later, Eugenie Foote attempt on goal carried wide of the net. Claudia Luna had a shot saved at the last second by Jones in the 43rd minute.

East Bay was tough on defense not allowing a shot by the Coyotes in the first half. The Pioneers had a 4-0 advantage in shots.

Cal State San Bernardino would get off its first shot and the eventual game winning goal in the 46th minute. Jani Carmona –Urbano  took a pass from Guadalupe Lara and scored her eighth goal of the season. The Coyotes would put up six more shots, but couldn't increase their advantage.

The Pioneers had a chance to tie the match in the 64th minute, but a shot by Sara Silva sailed wide of the net. 

“I think that emotion may have overcome us a bit,” Gerace said  “It seemed that the team was a little bit drained at half time and had a difficult time in the second half playing our style.
