Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer women's soccer team gave up a goal in the 88th minute and dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Cal State Monterey Bay, 1-0 on October 21.
With the defeat, the Pioneers are 2-9-1 in CCAA and 6-9-1 overall. Cal State Monterey Bay snaps a two-game losing streak and stands at 5-7 in the CCAA and 8-7 for the season. East Bay was outshot by an 11-8 margin, and had two shots on goal compared to five for the Otters.
Kara Yamamoto put up three shots for the Pioneers.
Shianna Falk, who had some good rushes down the field, recorded one shot. Pioneer goalkeeper
Jamie Botteon was outstanding in the net with four saves.
“The first half was a good, fairly even game,” Pioneer coach
Amy Gerace said. In the second half, Monterey Bay had more momentum, but we were able to contain them until the late goal.”
Andrea Davis scored the game winning goal for the Otters with an assist from Regan Porteous. For Davis, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
East Bay had a golden opportunity to score in the 49th minute.
Breahna Berry took a great pass from Falk and had a sure goal snatched away at the last second by Otter goalkeeper Diana Zambrano.
Cal State Monterey Bay challenged the Pioneer defense the following 17 minutes. Korie Soares attempt on goal went wide in the 56th minute. Five minutes later, Kristen Womack had her shot saved by Botteon. Soares second attempt on goal was turned away on a great save by Botteon in the 66th minute.
Each team had a chance to score the following 11 minutes. In the 73rd minute, Soares had her shot turned away by Botteon. Yamamoto attempt on goal was saved by Zambrano in the 77th minute.
The two teams played on even terms in a scoreless first half. In the fifth minute, Cal State Monterey had a nice rush down the field, only to see Michelle Garrone fan on a shot in front of the East Bay goal.
Yamamoto had her shot go over the net in the ninth minute for the Pioneers first shot of the game.
Gabriella Bozzo had a shot attempt go wide in the 12th minute for the Otters.
Zuly Diaz, who played outstanding defense for East Bay, took a corner kick and had her shot go wide of the net. Botteon turned away two Otter shots in the 30th and 40th minutes. The Pioneers'
Allison Ventura header went wide with seven seconds left in the first half.
“The players didn't feel this was their best game and came away disappointed with the outcome,” Gerace said.
The Pioneers will host U.C. San Diego on October 19 at 4:30 p.m.
