Cal State Monterey Bay started the match strong as they attempted to defend their home “Kelp Den.” Leading by one, the Otters used a 7-0 run to pull away in the first set. Although they played their best set of the night and kept the score close, the Pioneers never led in the opening frame.
That trend continued into the second set. Once again, Cal State East Bay never held the lead, and the Otters took advantage of Pioneer errors to cruise to the 25-14 victory. Already leading 2-0 in the match, Cal State Monterey Bay saved its best performance for last. The Pioneers grabbed an early 7-5 lead, but the Otters went on a huge run, winning 18 of the next 19 points to put the set and the match away.
The Pioneers return to Hayward and are back in action this weekend for two crucial CCAA matches. Cal State East Bay will host Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night, followed by Chico State on Saturday night, with both matches set for 7 p.m.
