Box Score POMONA, Calif. – The Pioneer women's soccer team gave up four goals in the opening 15 minutes of the game and lost to Cal Pomona 5-0 on October 19.
The defeat snaps a two-game winning streak for the Pioneers. East Bay is 2-8-1 in the CCAA and 6-8-1 for the season. Cal Poly Pomona improves to 6-4-2 in the CCAA and 8-4-2 overall. The Pioneers were outshot by a 21-11 margin.
Zuly Diaz had three shots, all in the second half.
“It's tough to give up four goals on four shots in the opening 15 minutes,” Pioneer coach
Amy Gerace said. “We made some adjustments and played better in the second half.”
Cal Poly Pomona took an early 1-0 lead on a breakaway goal by Veronica Ramos. For Ramos, it was her fourth goal of the season.
The Broncos made it 2-0 in the sixth minute as Sarah Semenero scored on a header. Two minutes later, Samantha Stiles knocked in a shot from six yards out to give the Broncos a 3-0 advantage. Cal Poly increased its advantage to 4-0 when Stiles scored her second goal of the game in the 14th minute.
East Bay regrouped in the 15th minute.
Katie Brawley had a shot go high, while Eugenie Foote attempt on goal was blocked by a Bronco defender. Pioneer goalkeeper
Jamie Botteon turned away a shot by Hannah Leu in the 26th minute.
The Pioneers had two attempts on goal before halftime. A header by
Shianna Falk went wide in the 38th minute. Three minutes later,
Claudia Luna had a shot go wide.
East Bay kept up the pressure early in the second half as
Kara Yamamoto had her shot go wide of the net in the 47th minute. A header by
Sara Yamasaki was saved by Bronco goalkeeper Sarah Rohman at the 55 minute mark.
Stiles recorded a hat trick and her sixth goal of the season when she scored in the 64th minute to give the Broncos their fifth and final goal of the game.
Diaz had a shot turned away by Bronco goalkeeper Kim Nemeth in the 82nd minute. Seconds later, Diaz attempt on goal went over the net.
The Pioneers had two opportunities to score before the end of regulation. In the 87th minute,
Shannon Fontes shot was saved by Nemeth. Diaz had a shot go wide left at the 89:25 mark.
“Our focus needs to shift to the match against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday,” Gerace said.
East Bay will host Cal State Monterey on October 21 at 11:30 a.m.
