Box Score POMONA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay and Cal Poly Pomona battled to a 2-2 tie in CCAA men's soccer action on October 19. The tie, the fourth for the Pioneers in CCAA play, leaves East Bay was a conference record of 1-6-4. The Pioneers are 3-7-4 for the season. Cal Poly Pomona, winless in its last five matches, is 1-8-3 in CCAA play and 3-8-3 overall.
The Pioneers were outshot by an 18-12 margin.
Rey Suarez led the way with five shots including his second goal of the season. “
Rey Suarez was a complete difference maker today,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “He was a threat every time he touched the ball.” He scored an excellent header goal,
was fouled a lot, including one in their box that resulted in a penalty kick.”
Derrek Driggs also played well for the Pioneers in the 2-2 tie. “
Duke Driggs also had a solid performance today,” Cumbo said. “He was a big part of our first goal and he had a strong presence on the field.”
Sam Duenas gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with his second goal of the season. “Sam Duenas scored a great goal and had a really positive performance,” Cumbo said.
Cal Poly Pomona evened the game in the 17th minute when Kris Korich scored from six yards out. Jesus Mitre was credited with the assist. The Broncos maintained the pressure with two shots on goal, both turned away by Pioneer goalkeeper
Rene Martinez.
In the 28th minute, East Bay regained the lead when Suarez headed the ball in the net off a cross pass from Baeuerle. The Pioneers'
Arthur Ethel had a shot go wide in the 42nd minute.
A pair of headers by the Broncos were unsuccessful in the first five minutes of the second half. Following a foul by the Pioneers, the Broncos equaled the match 2-2 in the 59th minute on a goal by Brandon Cortez. Johnny Mercer was credited with the assist. A minute later, Cortez had a shot go wide of the net.
The Pioneers regained possession 11 minutes later. Suarez had a shot turned away by Bronco goalkeeper Andrew Todd. A header by
Scott Dobson was saved by a Cal Poly Pomona defender.
Abraham Gomez had a shot saved by Pioneer goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer in the 86th minute. The Pioneers countered in the 87th minute when Baeuerle had a shot carry wide of the net.
Cal Poly Pomona had a final chance to win in regulation, but a shot by David Carrillo went wide of the Pioneer goal.
In the first overtime, Cortez shot attempt sailed over the net. East Bay had two opportunities to score in the first overtime.
Felix Jaekel attempt on goal went over the net in the 97th minute. A minute later, Baeuerle shot was saved by Todd.
Suarez had his fifth shot of the game blocked by a Bronco defender in the 103rd minute. Bookhamer made a big save on a header by Cortez in the 106th minute. The Pioneer backline held the Broncos without a shot in the final four minutes of the second overtime.
“We played well and created a lot of chances,” Cumbo said. “We missed a few sitters
and should be leaving here with three points.” We're looking forward to playing at home on Sunday.”
Cal State East Bay will return home on October 21 to face Cal State Monterey Bay.
