HAYWARD - The Pioneer women's soccer team will play a pair of CCAA games this week. On October 19, the Pioneers will play at Cal Poly Pomona. The game is set for 3:00 p.m. East Bay will return home on October 21 to face Cal State Monterey Bay. The game will begin at 11:30 a.m. Cal State East Bay defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 1-0 on September 30.
The October 21st game at Pioneer Stadium will be “Kick for the Cure” Day. Fliers, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will be distributed to fans attending the game. The fliers provide information about Breast Cancer and ways to combat the dreaded disease. Both Pioneer women's and men's soccer teams will be wearing the “Kick for the Cure” pink ribbon to support the fight against Breast Cancer.
East Bay stands in fifth place in the CCAA North at 2-7-1 and 6-7-1 following a pair of shutout victories over Mills College and Humboldt State and a 4-0 setback to North Division leader Sonoma State. East Bay has been involved in many close CCAA games during the 2012 campaign. One game was played to a 1-1 tie while eight other matches have been decided by one goal.
“I'm pleased with the way we've played in those nine conference games,” Pioneer coach
Amy Gerace said. “We've shown the ability to compete in this tough conference.”
Shianna Falk has scored 13 points on five goals and three assists. Falk has two game winning goals and a team-best 38 shots.
Kara Yamamoto has three goals and seven assists. Yamamoto also has two game winning goals including the go-head score in the Pioneers 1-0 victory over Humboldt State on October 13. Eugenie Foote has scored four goals in 14 games. Pioneer goalkeeper
Jamie Botteon has allowed 1.30 goals a game with 41 saves and two shutouts. The Pioneer backline, led by
Zuly Diaz, have given up 13 goals in their last 11 games.
Cal Poly Pomona stands in third place in the South Division of the CCAA with a 5-4-2 record. The Broncos are 7-4-2 for the season. In their last seven games, the Broncos have posted five victories and a pair of ties. Cal Poly Pomona, which has scored 19 goals for the season, is led by Aneska Alino with five goals. Veronica Ramos and Samantha Stiles each have scored three goals. Goalkeeper Sarah Rohman has allowed 1.18 goals a game. Rohman has recorded five shutouts in 12 games.
“Cal Poly Pomona is a well-coached and discipline team,” Gerace said. “They're very athletic and will give us all we can handle.”
Cal State Monterey Bay is in third place in the CCAA North Division with a 4-6 record. For the season, the Otters are 7-6. Andrea Davis is the Otters leading scorer with nine points on four goals and one assist. Davis has three game winning goals. Davis is followed by Kristen Womack with three goals and two assists. has allowed 1.33 goals a game with 38 saves and three shutouts.
“Monterey has good athletes who play a great style of soccer,” Gerace said. “I'm expecting another tough game.”
The Pioneers, 4-4 in their last eight games, are hopeful of continuing their fine play going into the weekend games against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay.
“I like the way we're playing now,” Gerace said. “We're getting better and I expect us to play well in both matches.”
The Pioneers will conclude the regular season next week with a pair of home games against UC San Diego on October 26 and Cal State San Bernardino on October 28.
