HAYWARD, Calif. –
The Pioneer men's soccer team turned in a solid performance in a 3-1 defeat to visiting Cal State Stanislaus on Friday.

A shot by Tyler Andersen went high in the 2nd minute.

Despite playing without three starting defenders, the Pioneers received solid play from backs Steven Belalcazar, who blocked a ball heading into the goal in the fourth minute and Oscar Padilla, who turned away another shot two minutes later.

In the 28th minute, Pioneer goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer made a great save on a shot by the Warriors' Carlos Gavino.

The Pioneers nearly scored in the 38th minute as a header by Florian Reppin was saved at the last second by Warrior goalkeeper Bill Hambelton.

Cal State East Bay continued to put on the offensive pressure as Kyle Ball had a free kick saved by Hambelton near the end of the first half.

“In the first half, our back-line did a good job absorbing their direct service and helped build our attack,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “We made some unexplainable plays which resulted in all three of their goals.”

The Warriors scored first in the 50th minute on an unassisted goal by Jose Velazquez.

Andre Ponce had a shot saved by Hambelton in the 60th minute. Two minutes later, Gavino converted a shot off the post to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.

Patrick Gilbertson replaced Bookhamer in goal in the 62nd minute and made a pair of nice saves to keep the Pioneers in the match.

The Pioneers cut the Warriors' lead to 2-1 in the 62nd minute as Miguel Padilla scored his first goal of the season off a throw-in by Ponce.

Manny Avila gave the Warriors the hard earned victory with an unassisted goal in the 76th minute.

Cal State Stanislaus out-shot Cal State East Bay by a 14-5 margin. Bookhamer and Gilbertson recorded three and two saves respectively.

“We did some positive things in the match,” Cumbo said. “In some areas we're getting better, but we haven't reached our full potential.”

The Pioneers, 0-5 in CCAA play and 1-6 overall, will host Chico State on Sunday, September 25 at 11:30 a.m.
