HAYWARD, Calif – The Pioneers lost their season finale to Cal State L.A. 5-1 on Sunday before 160 fans at Pioneer Stadium.
Cal State East Bay concluded CCAA play with a 1-15 record and finished 2-16 for the season. Cal State L.A. wins the CCAA South Division at 10-1-5 and concludes the regular season with a 12-1-5 record.
The Golden Eagles, unbeaten in their last 10 matches, will move on to the CCAA Playoffs next week.
“Right from the start our bass possession was great today,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “We were able to build out of the back, and consistently find ways into the final third. We generated a lot of crosses and corner kicks (6) in the first half, but just couldn't find a way to put the ball in the back of the net. CSULA countered on us very well and made the most of their chances early on.”
The Golden Eagles took an early lead in the fourth minute when Rosario Bras converted a shot into the corner of the net.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer saved a shot attempt by Golden Eagles' Jason Swope in the 15th minute.
Antti Arvola scored on a penalty kick in the 19th minute to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
A minute later, the Pioneers'

Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 3-0 when Swope scored on a cross shot across the goal.
Martin had two more shot attempts the following four minutes, but was unable to score.
Derek Faulkner scored on a cross pass from Nicolas Assad in the 36th minute as the Golden Eagles went into the locker room with a 4-0 lead.
The two teams played on even terms to open the second half.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the 55th minute when Sam Duenas scored his first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles' Jordan Payne had two shots go wide in the following five minutes.
East Bay's
Tyler Andersen had a shot saved by Jose Martinez in the 65th minute.
Following a shot by Arvola that hit the post, the Golden Eagles concluded the scoring in the 80th minute when Payne scored off a shot in the corner of the net.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Patrick Gilbertson made a great save off a shot by Faulkner in the 84th minute.
A header by the Pioneers'
Daniel Borst went wide two minutes later.
“We have made a tremendous amount of improvement throughout the year, and since 2009,” Cumbo said. “Our 29 players on the roster are either freshman, sophomores or first year players. Unfortunately we suffered a tremendous amount of injuries early on and through-out the season and we were forced to have players play in new roles. We have been through a lot this season and gain valuable experience and learning lessons.”
Cal State L.A. out-shot the Pioneers 13-9. Martin led the Pioneers with four shots including three on goal.
Cal State East Bay senior defender
Robin Patton, playing his final match in Pioneer Stadium, had another solid game in the back line.
