Pioneers Blanked by UC San Diego, 3-0

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Despite getting 10 shots, the Pioneers men's soccer team was shutout by UC San Diego 3-0 on Sunday.

With the defeat, the Pioneers are 0-8-0 in CCAA play and 1-9-0 overall. UC San Diego improves to to 5-3 in the CCAA and 6-4 for the season.

The Tritons' Sam Ball scored in the 1st minute of the match. Cory Wolfrom was credited with the assist.

UC San Diego put up two shots in the following nine minutes, but was unable to score.

Christian Lara recorded the first Pioneers shot which was turned away by Triton goalkeeper Jesse Brennan in the 12th minute.

The Pioneers' Andres Ponce had a shot go wide two minutes later.

Pioneer goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer made three saves in the following nine minutes to keep the Pioneers in the match.

In the 29th minute, Kian Malek scored his first goal of the season to give the Tritons a 2-0 advantage.

Tyler Andersen had a shot saved by Brennan in the 35th minute.

“Unfortunately, we gave up a goal in the 1st minute,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “That's a challenging way to start the match.”

Both teams combined for five shots in the first 11 minutes of the second half.

UC San Diego scored its final in the 57th minute as Evan Walker recorded his first goal of the season with an assist by Alec Arsht.

The Pioneers final scoring chance came in the 67th minute as Robin Patton had a shot saved by Brennan.

“We took control of the ball and forced their goalkeeper to make some great saves in the second half,”
Cumbo said.

Cal State East Bay was out-shot by a 19-10 margin. Ponce and Javier Martin each had three shots. Bookhamer recorded six saves.

“Despite the results, the team is making progress and doing their best to play a good brand of soccer,” Cumbo said. “The motivation is still high and the players understand it takes time to develop.”

The Pioneers will host San Francisco State on October 7 at 7 p.m.
