HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's soccer team lost a road contest to Sonoma State 9-0 on September 16. On Sunday, the Pioneers gave the Northern Division leading Sonoma State a tremendous game before losing to the Seawolves 2-1.
The defeat leaves the Pioneers with a 1-11 record in the CCAA and 2-12 overall. Sonoma State remains in first place in the CCAA Northern Division at 8-3-1 and 9-4-1 for the season.
Sonoma State got off three shots in the opening eight minutes, but was unable to score.
Cal State East Bay controlled possession as
Andres Ponce had a shot blocked and another attempt go wide.
Following a save by goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute as Ponce scored his first goal of the season with an assist from
Martin Medina.
Bookhamer was solid in the net for the Pioneers saving two shots in the final 14 minutes of the first half.
The Pioneers 1-0 advantage was short lived as the Seawolves' Jomed Tejan converted a header just 19 seconds into the second half.
Sonoma State kept the pressure on getting off seven shots in the following 19 minutes.
Michel Arroyo scored the decisive goal for the Seawolves in the 64th minute. Arroyo nailed a shot in the left corner for his sixth goal of the season.
The Pioneers final scoring chance came in the 73rd minute when
Rey Suarez had his shot blocked.
“I was pleased with the level of focus and execution by the players today,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “Our center backs did a good job of limiting their center forwards involvement in the game. This was a better performance on our end.”
For the game, the Pioneers were outshot by a 26-7 margin. Ponce led the Pioneers with five shots. Bookhamer ended with seven saves.
