East Bay Defeats Humboldt State for Second Consecutive Victory

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer women's soccer team made it two straight victories following a 3-1 win over Humboldt State on Friday night.

With the victory, the Pioneers improve 4-6-1 in CCAA action and 5-7-1 overall. Humboldt State is 0-9-2 in the CCAA and 1-9-2 for the season.

“I thought our forwards played great tonight coming up with three quality goals,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “Our team has been doing a great job of really working together and supporting each other. They take their roles and responsibilities seriously and it's showing on the field.”

The two teams played on even terms in the opening 15 minutes as the Pioneers and Lumberjacks had two shots apiece.

Eugenie Foote scored her fourth goal of the season in the 16th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

In the 20th minute, the Lumberjacks' Lizzie Mitchell had her shot hit the post.

The Pioneers increased their lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute as Ariana Nobrega scored a goal off a great pass by Claudia Luna. For Nobrega, it was her fourth goal of the season.

Humboldt State nearly scored in the 37th minute as Liz Christensen's shot hit the post.

Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo punched out a corner kick in the final minute of the first half.

Humboldt State had two shots to open the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Luna had a shot go wide in the 50th minute while Nobrega's attempt on goal was saved by Lumberjack goalkeeper Amber Woolcock in the 58th minute .

Shianna Falk increased the Pioneers' lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute with her second goal of the season.

Humboldt State scored in the 72nd minute as Tamra James put the ball past Cefalo for her first goal of the season.

The Pioneers had a near miss in the 82nd minute as Nobrega's shot hit the cross bar.

Colette Behen's shot was turned away by Cefalo in the 83rd minute to spoil Humboldt's final scoring chance of the match.

Tenaya Davis and Breanna Baker had a solid game in the back,” Gerace said. “I'm happy with the result and team effort.”

Cefalo recorded three saves in the victory. Woolcock turned away five shots for the Lumberjacks.

Cal State East Bay out-shot Humboldt State by a 12-11 margin. Nobrega led the Pioneers with four shots.

The Pioneers will host Sonoma State on October 16 at 2:00 p.m.
