Smith became the first Cal State East Bay male runner ever to earn CCAA Freshman of the Year honors after finishing as the top rookie in the Men's 8k race at CCAA Championships. He placed 21st overall, leading the East Bay men's team to a sixth-place team finish and capping off an outstanding freshman season in which he ran the third-fastest 8k time in school history.
