Senior distance swimmer Rachel Shimizu has been named Cal State East Bay's Female Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Doubletree by Hilton Pleasanton at the Club, for Oct. 19-25.
She captured first place in both her individual races and led the Pioneer 800 freestyle relay team to a victory at Saturday's Bay Area Invitational, hosted by Mills College. For her efforts, Shimizu was named PCSC Division II Female Swimmer of the Week.
The Hilo, Hawaii native dominated in her first 1650 freestyle race of the season, out-pacing the field by 40 seconds with a time of 17:46.94. Shimizu was also the winner in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in 5:08.55. Both her individual times rank among the top 10 in the Division II women's seasonal ranking.
In addition, Shimizu led off the first-place 800 free relay squad with an impressive split of 1:56.37. It was the fastest 200 free time posted by anyone at the meet.
