Freshman Alex Vesia has been named Cal State East Bay's Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by the DoubleTree by Hilton Pleasanton at the Club, for Apr. 6-12. He pitched the Pioneer baseball team to a 3-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, securing a series split against the first-place Broncos, who entered the week as the No. 18 ranked team in the nation.

Vesia allowed just one run in six innings of work before handing the ball to senior Julian Garcia for a one-inning save. The left-hander scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter. 

Vesia has made nine starts for the Pioneers in his first season and has not allowed more than three runs in any of them. He leads the team and ranks sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a 2.17 ERA, and opponents are batting just .220 against him. The southpaw has two complete games on the season and his three victories are tied for the most on the squad.
