HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay battled No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona in four sets Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Gymnasium, taking the second set and pushing the Broncos to 26 points in the fourth before falling 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24.
After dropping the opening set, East Bay responded in the second. The Pioneers held Cal Poly Pomona to a .085 hitting percentage and took the frame 25-21 to even the match at one set apiece.
The Broncos regained the advantage with a 25-18 win in the third, setting up a tightly contested fourth set.
East Bay put together its strongest offensive set of the afternoon in the fourth, recording 14 kills with just four errors on 48 attempts for a .208 hitting percentage. The frame featured nine ties as the Pioneers looked to force a fifth set, but Cal Poly Pomona held on for a 26-24 victory to close the match.
Lamona Lauhingoa led East Bay with 18 kills and added 12 digs for a double-double. Barakat Adekola followed with 11 kills and 10 digs for a double-double of her own while adding two service aces.
Pi'ilani Carvalho distributed 34 assists and added 14 digs, three service aces, two kills, a solo block and two block assists.
Kale'a Kuamo'o anchored the back row with a match-high 22 digs and added a service ace. Gianna Navarro contributed eight kills, 11 digs, two service aces and two block assists, while Carys Fouser recorded four kills, a solo block and five block assists.
East Bay finished with 45 kills, 43 assists, eight service aces and 75 digs while hitting .140.
With the result, Cal State East Bay moves to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play.
