TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team bounced back after dropping the opening set to defeat San Francisco State, 3-1, on Friday at Fitzpatrick Arena. The Pioneers won the final three sets to improve to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play.
San Francisco State edged East Bay 25-23 in a tightly contested opening set, but the Pioneers responded immediately. East Bay evened the match with a 25-19 victory in the second before taking control with a 25-17 win in the third. The Pioneers completed the comeback by taking the fourth set, 25-22.
Makaiya Gerhardt led the East Bay attack with 12 kills while hitting .321 and adding eight digs. Carys Fouser and Brooklynne Traficante each recorded seven kills, with Fouser hitting .462 and contributing one solo block and nine block assists. Traficante was efficient throughout the match, committing no attack errors on 10 attempts to finish with a team-best .700 hitting percentage.
Pi'ilani Carvalho helped direct the offense with 31 assists while adding 12 digs, four kills and two service aces. Kale'a Kuamo'o led the defensive effort with 17 digs, while Lamona Lauhingoa added 10.
The Pioneers also made an impact from the service line, finishing with 10 aces. Gianna Navarro and Lauren Au led the way with three apiece, while Carvalho added two.
East Bay finished the match with 46 kills and a .173 hitting percentage, along with 68 digs and 13 total blocks. The Pioneers' most efficient offensive set came in the second, when they recorded 15 kills with just three errors to hit .324.
After falling just short in the opening frame, East Bay responded by winning three consecutive sets to secure its second CCAA victory of the season.
